Golden light, wide open spaces, and kids who are free to run around instead of being asked to sit still every five seconds. This family session with Caroline, Price, and little H was exactly that—playful, relaxed, and full of the kinds of moments that make family photos feel like memories instead of a checklist.
Golden hour at Brushy Creek Lake Park in the fall is always a favorite, and this one graced us with some of the best light!
When I met up with Caroline, Price, and, we’ll call him little H, the sun was still a bit high, so we started under the oaks where the light filters through just right. It’s one of my go-to spots for easing into a session. We start with the more posed, smile-for-the-camera shots (especially with a two-year-old who has much better things to do than stand still—the beginning of the session is generally our best time to do so!). Little H kept us moving, exploring around, coming back in for a quick hug, then off again.
One of my favorite things about this family was how completely they embraced the season of life they’re in. There was no trying to slow little H down or convince him to sit perfectly for every photo. Caroline and Price simply followed his lead, laughed right along with him, and turned every little adventure into another chance to connect. Those are always the moments that end up meaning the most.
Once the sun dipped a little lower, we headed out into the open field and got that warm, golden glow Brushy Creek is known for. This is what makes fall family photos in Austin so special: that soft light and space for kids to just be themselves. Little H was still on the move, and it turned into lots of running, laughing, and those in-between moments that end up being the favorites.
Why I Love Photographing Family Sessions at Brushy Creek Lake Park
Brushy Creek Lake Park is one of my favorite locations for family photos in the Austin area because it offers so much variety without feeling crowded or overwhelming. Between the shaded oak trees, open grassy fields, walking trails, and beautiful golden light, it’s the perfect place for families with young kids to explore naturally. Instead of expecting little ones to stand still, we let them be curious, play, and interact with the people they love most—which always leads to photos that feel genuine and full of personality.
Capturing family sessions are some of my absolute favorite! There’s no pressure for kids to “behave” or look at the camera the whole time, and this session was exactly why—that freedom is what makes everything feel real. Caroline and Price leaned right into it, just following his lead, picking him up when he wanted, letting him run when he didn’t, and that helped the photos be truly candid!
If you’re looking for a natural, relaxed family photo session in the Austin area, Brushy Creek Lake Park is such a beautiful option year-round. It’s perfect for families with young kids who need room to explore while we capture genuine connection along the way.
It didn’t feel posed or rushed, just a really sweet evening with a family letting their kid be little and enjoying it right alongside him!
These are the kinds of sessions that make me love what I do.
